Cambio climático y distribución potencial del bosque mesófilo de montaña en el Centro de México. Colegio de Postgraduados
Cruz Leyva, Isidro Amhed.

Children's Educational Completion Rates and Dropouts in the Context of Ethiopia's National Poverty Reduction Strategy AgEcon
Woldehanna, Tassew; Jones, Nicola; Tefera, Bekele.
A combination of quantitative and qualitative method was used to analyse the determinants of school completion/dropout of children from primary education. A Cox box proportional hazard model was used analyse the survival of children in primary education. The findings have important implications for the formulation and revising Ethiopian Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper. While the policy focus of the 1996-initiated ESDP and the SDPRP (2002-5) on increasing educational access for all has been broadly successful, children from poor and/or highly indebted families still face significant constraints because they have to contribute to household survival through paid and unpaid work. It is therefore imperative to increase efforts to improve the livelihood options...

Distance Education in Agricultural Economics: Perceptions of Department Heads AgEcon
Jensen, Kimberly L.; English, Burton C.; Clark, Christopher D..
Heads of agricultural economics and agribusiness departments across the United States are surveyed to develop an inventory of distance education (DE) offerings by their departments. Perceived challenges, strategies for use, and future plans for DE are assessed. While the majority of the responding departments offer DE, the department heads believed that faculty time costs to develop/deliver DE are high relative to traditional delivery and that both strategic plans for implementing DE and financial incentives for faculty to adopt DE are lacking. The department heads did, however, have positive views about the technological ability of students to use distance courses.

STUDENT NUMBERS AND SUSTAINING COURSES AND FIELDS IN PH.D. PROGRAMS AgEcon
Davis, George C.; Perusquia, Ernesto.
Many agricultural economics departments are concerned about the vitality of their Ph.D. programs. A particular problem is insufficient student numbers to justify teaching certain courses or fields. As a consequence, much faculty time can be spent debating alternative program structures without any real idea of the likelihood that a proposed program structure will succeed. This article presents a framework for deriving some analytical and empirical results for alternative Ph.D. program structures. A downloadable program is used to generate some representative results that will hopefully help others minimize speculations and time spent in committee or departmental meetings.

Student Perceptions of Online Distance Education in Undergraduate Agricultural Economic Programs AgEcon
House, Lisa; Weldon, Richard N.; Wysocki, Allen F..
Undergraduate Food and Resource Economics majors and those with different majors were surveyed to determine the perceived advantages and disadvantages of distance and online education courses from a student perspective. Specific objectives included determining if students who have been exposed to more online courses are more likely to rate online education as positive or negative relative to the traditional classroom setting. In general, Food and Resource Economics majors tended to view distance and online education courses less favorably than did the others.

Students' Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness: What Surveys Tell and What They Do Not Tell AgEcon
Alauddin, Mohammad; Tisdell, Clement A..
Employing student evaluation of teaching (SET) data on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate economics courses, this paper uses ordered probit analysis to (i) investigate how student’s perceptions of ‘teaching quality’ (TEVAL) are influenced by their perceptions of their instructor’s attributes relating including presentation and explanation of lecture material, and organization of the instruction process; (ii) identify differences in the sensitivity of perceived teaching quality scores to variations in the independent variables; (iii) investigate whether systematic differences in TEVAL scores occur for different levels of courses; and (iv) examine whether the SET data can provide a useful measure of teaching quality. It reveals that student’s...

Teaching Agricultural Policy Using Games: The Agripol Game AgEcon
Jongeneel, Roelof A.; Koning, Niek.
We developed the AGRIPOL game as a tool for teaching agricultural policy to economic and non-economic students. AGRIPOL consists of a world with 7 different countries, each one represented by a small group of students. The students have to maximize their country's social welfare by choosing an optimal set of policy instruments. By doing this students learn in an interesting and hands-on way to understand the workings of agricultural policy instruments, the interrelatedness between countries (policy impact spill-overs) and the role of political weights in the policy formation process. A WTO negotiation round is included to let students experience the difficulties and benefits of cooperation.

Using Distance Education in Graduate Programs AgEcon
Featherstone, Allen M.; Brummett, Lynnette M..
There has been much hype around online education creating a revolution in education. Studies analyzing the use of distance education at the graduate level have been limited. This article uses Kansas State University's Master of Agribusiness program as a case study. Educational theory related to a distance environment is studied. Development and technology issues related to the Master of Agribusiness program are presented followed by survey information from students. Appropriate administrative and management practices that govern a program are essential to the success of the program.
